What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes and, more recently, approved for weight loss management. It belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which mimic the hormone GLP-1 to regulate blood sugar levels, increase feelings of fullness, and reduce hunger.

How Does Semaglutide Help with Weight Loss?

Semaglutide works by:

– Suppressing appetite

– Slowing stomach emptying

– Reducing food cravings

– Making cells more sensitive to insulin

Over time, these effects can help you consume fewer calories, which may lead to weight loss.

What Results Can I Expect for Weight Loss?

Weight loss results vary by individual, but in clinical studies, people taking semaglutide for weight loss have lost, on average, 10-15% of their body weight over a 6-month to 1-year period. Results may depend on lifestyle factors like diet and physical activity.

How is Semaglutide Administered?

Semaglutide is typically taken as a once-weekly injection under the skin. The dose starts low and is gradually increased to minimize side effects. See the detailed instructions at the end of this document for more information.

What are Common Side Effects?

Like any medication, semaglutide may cause side effects. Common ones include:

– Nausea (the most common, especially in the beginning)

– Vomiting

– Diarrhea or constipation

– Abdominal pain

– Heartburn

These side effects are usually temporary and subside as your body adjusts to the medication. If they persist or worsen, consult your healthcare provider.

Are There Serious Side Effects?

Although rare, serious side effects can occur, such as:

– Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas): Seek medical attention if you experience severe stomach pain that doesn’t go away.

– Gallbladder problems: Symptoms include upper abdominal pain, fever, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin/eyes).

– Thyroid tumors (in animals, this has been observed but is very rare in humans).

If you have a history of thyroid cancer or other specific medical conditions, talk to your doctor before starting semaglutide.

Can I Eat Whatever I Want While Taking Semaglutide?

Semaglutide can help control your appetite, but it is not a substitute for a healthy diet. It’s important to follow a balanced, high-protein diet while on this medication to maximize weight loss and maintain results. Hydration is also very important. Download our Well World App for guidance on healthy eating and for nutritious recipes that can enhance your semaglutide regimen.

How Quickly Will I See Results?

Patients may start noticing reduced appetite and weight loss in the first few weeks, though substantial changes typically occur after a few months. The gradual increase in dosage helps your body adjust and enhance results over time. Most patients lose 1-3 pounds per week.

Do I Need to Exercise?

Exercise is highly recommended to support weight loss and improve overall health while on semaglutide. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week, such as walking, swimming, or cycling. Exercising daily is even better!

How Long Will I Be on Semaglutide?

Semaglutide can be taken long-term if it continues to be effective and well-tolerated. Your doctor will regularly evaluate your progress and adjust treatment as necessary. In some cases, stopping the medication can lead to weight regain.

Can I Take Semaglutide with Other Medications?

Semaglutide may interact with certain medications, especially other diabetes medications. Always inform your healthcare provider about any other drugs or supplements you are taking before starting semaglutide.

What Should I Avoid While Taking Semaglutide?

– Alcohol: It’s best to limit alcohol, as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar and digestive issues.

– High-fat meals: These can worsen gastrointestinal side effects.

– Large meals: These can worsen gastrointestinal side effects.

– Dehydration: These can worsen gastrointestinal side effects.

Will Semaglutide Affect My Blood Sugar if I’m Not Diabetic?

Semaglutide is used to lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. If you are taking it for weight loss without diabetes, your doctor will monitor your blood sugar levels to ensure they stay within a healthy range.

What If I Miss a Dose?

If you miss a dose of semaglutide, take it as soon as you remember, as long as it’s within 5 days of the missed dose. If more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and take the next one on your regular schedule. Do not double up doses.

Can Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women Take Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. If you become pregnant while taking semaglutide, inform your doctor immediately.

Is Semaglutide the same as the brand Ozempic?

Chemically, it is the exact same as the FDA-approved medication. Because there is a shortage of the name brand, licensed compounding pharmacies in California may produce it. The pharmacy we use is certified, FDA-inspected, and provides batch certification of the product.

Starting Semaglutide

This is your guide to starting semaglutide. For step-by-step instructions on how to administer semaglutide, please watch the applicable videos in our Well World App.

Before You Start:

Before you can get started with semaglutide, you will need to order a sharps container and syringes (1cc 31G 5/16” insulin syringe)

Here are examples:

Here are

Reconstitute the Medication

IF DIFFERENT RECONSTITUTION INSTRUCTIONS COME FROM THE PHARMACY, IGNORE THEM – THOSE INSTRUCTIONS WILL GIVE YOU A DILLUTED PRODUCT. IF YOU FOLLOW THOSE INSTRUCTIONS, YOU WILL HAVE TO INJECT EXTRA FLUID, WHICH IS UNCOMFORTABLE!

Prime the Medication

Prime a 7mg vial and reconstitute with 1.4ml bacteriostatic water (you will be throwing out most of the bacteriostatic water). This will result in an easy-to-dose 5mg/ml concentration.

Watch the video in the Well World App for detailed instructions on taking semaglutide.

Administer the Injection

Pull back the plunger on the syringe to the unit indicator. Push the needle through the rubber top and inject the air. Withdraw medication to the unit indicator. If it is difficult to tell, draw up excess medication and then push it back into the vial. Inject the medication by pinching an area of skin and fat on the side of the abdomen and injecting into the pinched area. Do not inject deep into a muscle.

Week Dose

How much to inject

(1ml insulin syringe)

1-4 0.25mg 5 units
5-8 0.5mg 10 units

How do I know if I’m at the optimal dose?

  • If you have been at a dose for 4 weeks and aren’t losing, you should go up.
  • If you have been at a dose for 4 weeks and are continuing to lose, consider staying at the lowest effective dose.
  • If you have severe side effects, your next dose should always be lower, or even skip a week. You can try a higher dose again after 4 weeks of no side effects.
  • DO NOT increase the dose more quickly than every 4 weeks without checking in with Dr. Erica to have an increase approved.
